Leaving Irene Behind

A month ago, Tropical Storm Irene changed Vermont's landscape. We mourned property and crop losses with friends and clients as the state started to rebuild. Challenges remain, but Vermont is open for business and ready to welcome visitors to a fabulous foliage season.

Like many fellow Vermonters, we have made our own effort in assisting those affected by the storm.  One of the things we were able to do was to provide laundry services to National Guard members from Virginia, Maine and South Carolina who came to Vermont to help us clean up and rebuild.  It was an honor to serve these dedicated men and women.

Please visit http://vtresponse.wordpress.com/ if you would like more information about assisting flood victims.

Speaking of Fall Foliage...

Almost anywhere you drive in Vermont will reward you with wonderful foliage viewing.  Here are some suggestions for your next weekend drive:

Vermont shares the Connecticut River Byway with New Hampshire and Massachusetts. This byway travels down both sides of New England’s longest river – the Connecticut River. Some interesting things that you can see along the way include:
  • The Rockingham Meeting House, Rockingham,VT
  • The Cronish-Windsor Covered Bridge that spans the Connecticut River between Cornish, NH and Windsor, VT. It is the 2nd longest covered bridge in the United States and purported to be the longest two-span covered bridge in the world.
  • The American Precision Museum, Windsor, Vermont which has a large collection of historically significant machine tools.
  • The Billings Farm and Museum and Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historic Park, Woodstock, VT
  • Quechee Gorge and Quechee State ParkThe New England Transportation Museum, White River Junction, VT

You certainly can pick almost any stretch of Vermont’s Route 100 and be richly rewarded with wonderful scenery and foliage vistas. A particularly popular stretch runs from Killington to Waterbury. Some of the “extras” along the way include:
  • The Town Green in Rochester
  • Moss Glen Falls
  • The Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream Factory in Waterbury

The Mad River Byway consists of a stretch of Route 100 from Granville to Middlesex and a stretch of Route 17 from Irasville over to near Baby Stark Mountain. It is designated a scenic byway by both the National Scenic Byways program and the Vermont Byways Program.

Route 4 east to west from Rutland to Hartford is officially designated as the Crossroad of Vermont Byway. It passes through many quaint New England towns and scenic vistas. Along the way it passes through the Green Mountain National Forest as well as by the Appalachian Trail.

A note from Sue Lackey, Latitude 15 sales manager:

On the surface, the Latitude 15 cardigans and pullovers look like just another pretty/handsome sweater.  However, designed into the yarns is the most extraordinary second skin garment every developed! Conceived by Vergennes resident Robert Hardy to utilize his alpaca fibers from his farm, and to provide a high performance garment for the hardiest outdoors men and women, Latitude 15 shirts, hats, and socks are the answer to warmth without weight, body temperature control, and odor free active wear for cooler temperatures.  Latitude 15 garments are meant to be worn next to your skin, as a second skin, for best performance.  The pullover models have raglan sleeves for maximum reach and motion without binding.  The cardigan models step up the style and were designed for our customers who wanted a Latitude 15 model for everyday!

Whether paragliding 1000’s of feet above the earth, climbing one of the worlds most formidable mountains, or simply working outside in Vermont winters, Latitude 15 will amaze you with its comfort, softness, and length of wear between washings.

The secret is in the mixture of alpaca, sterling silver and dry release fibers.  The sterling silver provides the antibacterial/antimicrobial characteristics used by  NASA in the space program.  Of course the sterling silver also helps control excess heat by wicking it away from the body while the Dry Release fibers wick away perspiration.  Recommended care is hand washing with NO DRYER, or beautifully provided by Gadue’s Dry Cleaning.  These are a must experience garment for the active lifestyle.  Fall sailing anyone?!
